PATU' Lecce (Puglia)
Sun and sea, Food and wine
The place name comes from the Greek “pathos” meaning “pain” and referring to the pain of the inhabitants of Vereto when Saracens destroyed it. It was after Vereto destruction that Patù was born, in 924. It was always property of the Episcopal authority and the Aragones prince until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.
Patù rises at the furthermost point of Leuca Cape. The town guards important symbols for Salento culture, for example the archaeological site of Vereto, ruins of an ancient messapian village, and the monument of Centopietre (“one hundred stones”) that is a funeral monument where General Geminiano was buried when he was killed by Saracens because he entered in their camp, although he entered as a messenger of peace. San Giovanni Battista Church recalls Saracens’ invasions too: it was built to remember the battle between Christians and Saracens that took place in Patù on June 24th 877. other interesting buildings are San Michele Arcangelo Church and Palazzo Romano.
