POGGIARDO Lecce (Puglia)
Sun and sea, Food and wine
The place name comes from “podium ardum” that means “steep knoll” and it refers to the wood surrounding the town. It seems that Poggiardo was born after the destruction of three villages (Puzze, Soranello and Casicalvi) during the Norman age. It was not a real foundation, but it was a steady progress of some rupestrian villages that took shape as one village during the Anjous age.
Poggiardo stands in the hinterland of Salento and it guards lots of historic and natural treasures. Vaste is a sort of an “outdoor museum” where there are the ruins of megalithic city walls, dating back to the 4th century BC, a Byzantine crypt and a prehistoric settlement. Furthermore the town boasts some interesting karstic grottoes and some elegant buildings such as Chiesa della Trasfigurazione del Signore and Palazzo Guarini.
