Storia comune di Porto Cesareo provincia di Lecce
The territory was inhabited since the 18th century BC, but definitely it was a Roman dominion and it was used as a port with the name of “Sasinae Portus”. Although the surrounding marshy area and the Saracens’ threats, some Basilian monks settled there in 1000 and they built up Santa Maria de Cesarea Abbey, existing until the 15th century. Around 16th century some watchtowers were built all around the area to prevent Saracens’ invasions and the tower of Cesarea was completed in 1570. The territory was then abandoned, but it came back to life at the end of 18th century with the settlement of tuna nets all along the coast. It was a Nardò hamlet until 1975 when it got the autonomy. Nowadays Porto Cesareo is definitely one of the most renowned fishing centres and one of the best places for summertime holidays.

Porto Cesareo is a 20 km-coast peninsula. Definitely it is renowned just for its coast: rugged, with rocky bays and golden beaches it attracts lots of tourists every summer thanks to the clear sea as well and thanks to the marine reserve where sea lovers will love snorkelling. Another curious activity is “fish-tourism”: some fishermen will give you the possibility to embark on their vessels for recreational-tourism purposes such as catering on board to taste some local fish-titbits.
