SALICE SALENTINO Lecce (Puglia)
Food and wine
The place name comes from the presence of many willows (“salice” in Italian) o that territory. The word “salentino” refers to Salento plain. It was a contested village because it was in the middle between Taranto and Lecce and in fact it was always under aristocratic families until the abolition of feudalism.
Salice Salentino is situated 20 km away from Lecce and farming is definitely the mainstay of local economy, especially for olive oil and wine production: Salice Salentino wine is now famous all over the world. Its historic centre boasts some interesting buildings: Santa Maria Assunta Church and Castle of the Monks, so called because it was a worship place for Basilian monks. Few km away from the town there is Madonna del Latte Chapel, especially dear to local inhabitants.
