SALVE Lecce (Puglia)
Food and wine
When Romans conquered Messapia territory in 267 BC they used to share the conquered lands among the most skilled soldiers. The territory corresponding to the current Salve was given to Salvius, a roman soldier. Because of the malaria, many inhabitants of surrounding villages took refuge in Salve thus enlarging the town. It was part of Taranto and then it was a fief for lots of families until the abolition the feudalism.
Salve it is renowned especially for its seaside resorts: Pescoluse, Posto Vecchio, Torre Pali and Lido Marini boast an enchanting clear sea and large golden beaches winning of FEE Blue Flag in 2009. The town as well is very interesting for its historic treasure: “specchie” (dolmens covered with mounds), Feudo del Fano, an ancient messapian village, and lots of farmhouses spread all around the countries. There are also some underground mills and watchtowers. In Saint Nicola Magno Church there is the Apulia oldest operable organ.
