The territory was inhabited from many people coming from Crete, from Aegean Islands and from Troia. But the pagan legend tells that Ercole killed the Giants living in this area and their corpses released substanes that turned the surrounded spring waters into thermal waters. The Christian legend tells about a lustful father, or a Saracen pirate, that gave too many cares to his vergin daughter Cesarea. So Cesarea run away from him and she took refuge in a cave. Thanks to her prayers the cave opened and her father was swallowed down and burnt by sulphur.

Santa Cesarea Terme rises on a gentle slope overlooking Otranto Channel. It is a pleasant seaside resort with clear sea, sheer cliffs and golden beaches, but it is renowned especially for its thermal springs with healing properties. The main spa is Palazzo Sticchi, a Moorish-style building overlooking the sea. In town there are some wathctowers and the “Cisternale”, an ancient and still mysterious building. In Santa Cesarea Terme it is possible to have fun and practise some sports: swimming, diving, snorkelling in its clear waters and horse-riding and trekking in the surrounding pinewood on the coast and in the Regional Park “Costa Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca-Tricase”.
