Storia comune di Tiggiano provincia di Lecce
When Romans conquered Messapia territory in 267 BC they used to share the conquered lands among the most skilled soldiers. The territory corresponding to the current Tiggiano was given to Tibius or Tegius, a roman soldier. But some says the place name comes from the Latin word “tegia” meaning “straw store” and others say it comes from the god Janus. The first document in which Tiggiano is mentioned dates back to the 1270, when it was part of Alessano County; then it was fief for lots of families until the abolition of feudalism.

Tiggiano is part of the Regional Park “Costa Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca-Tricase” founded to preserve the east coast of Salento plain that is rich in lots of different animals and plant species. Some of the most interesting buildings in town are Palazzo Baronale Serafini-Sauli, dating back to the 17th century, and Torre Nasparo, a watchtower built up in 1565 to prevent Saracens’ invasions.
