Storia comune di Tuglie provincia di Lecce
A first settlement rose up in 1270 with the name of “Casale Tulli” and it was a property of Almerico di Montedragone, an Anjous officer. When Almerico moved away from Casale Tulli to crush a revolt in Taranto, Gervaso da Matino occupied and conquered the territory and he turned its name into “Castri Tulli”. After the Saracen invasion of 1480 the territory was abandoned and from the neglect of soil some white cedars grew up: hence the name of the new village that rose up after the Saracens’ invasion (“white cedars” in Italian is “tuie”).

Tuglie is a lovely small town of Salento plain. It bears some witnesses of prehistoric era such as four menhirs (Monte Primo, Nove Croci, Caruggio, Scirocco) and Passaturi Grottoes known also as “old houses” because they were previously used as houses from ancient peoples. History is still present in the historic centre of the town: walking around Tuglie’s alleyways you’ll see old wells with water container (“pileddhe”) where in the past it was used to wash kitchenware and linen. Among the most interesting buildings there are Palazzo Ducale, Villa Luisi, Chiesa Matrice.
