VERNOLE Lecce (Puglia)
Art and culture, Nature and welness
The place name possibly comes from the word “verno” referring to “to spring, to blossom” because of the mild climate of the town. Or maybe it comes from “vernatio” that means a sort of “new growth” referring to the development of the town from the ancient settlement (that was San Lorenzo). But some says it comes from “ver in olae” that means “spring among olive trees” because the territory is dotted with olive trees.
Vernole is an interesting town thanks to its archaeological and natural beauties. There are lots of prehistoric witnesses such as menhirs and “specchie” (dolmens covered with mounds) in Acquarica, Acaya and Pisignano hamlets. Nature lovers should not miss a visit to “Le Cesine” a WWF nature reserve that still guards the last stretch of marsh with its various landscape. The only marks of the ancient Vernole are San Lorenzo Church and the underground olive mill “Trappeto Caffa” because all other monuments rose up in modern times: Santa Maria Assunta Church, Palazzo Baronale and Sant’ Anna Column date back to the 18th century. You should not miss a visit to Acaya Castle and to the “masserie” (farmhouses) spread all around Vernole’s countries. San Cataldo and Torre Specchia are the seaside resorts of the town where every summers lots of tourist come to spend their holidays.
