Certainly the territory was inhabited from Messapian, Iapygians and Siculans. The town was founded in the 10th century when the farmers moved to the ravines using grottoes as shelter from Saracens’ invasions. The place name comes from “Castanea”, the name of one of this settlements: the unification of all the rupestrian settlements took the name of “Castellum Unitum”. It was under Normans and Anjous and here a battle between French and Spanish took place in 1503. In 1519 it was under the Flemish people and then it was a fief for some aristocratic families.

Castellaneta stands on the edge of a ravine, just in the heart of the Regional Park of Ravines. Here there are lots of rupestrian (rocky) marks as ancient churches and underground mills and the old town is a maze of narrow alleyways (built purposely in this way to escape Saracens’ raids) surrounded by elegant palaces built up in a fine Baroque style. Few km away from the town, on the Ionian coast, there is Castellaneta Marina: with its clear sea, its sand dunes and surrounded by a wide pinewood, it’s a renowned seaside resort offering villas, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, cinemas, golf courses. Furthermore Castellaneta is the birthplace of the Hollywood idol Rudolph Valentino.
