Storia comune di Grottaglie provincia di Taranto
The place name comes from “Crypta aliae” that means “many grottoes”. Indeed the territory was first inhabited by peoples coming from Taranto that took refuge from Saracens‘ invasions in the grottoes of this area. As time goes by, those people abandoned the grottoes to go on the near hills where they founded some villages as “Casale Cryptalearum”, previous settlement of current Grottaglie. The foundation dates back to 1297, but it fell into decline because of the fights between laical and religious authorities and because of the Spanish misgovernment. Then it followed the Apulia history until the Unification of Italy.

Grottaglie stands on the last Murgia hills and its soil is rich in ravines and grottoes. The historic centre indeed is entirely dug into the tuff rock (“tufo”) and here there are the most interesting buildings: Episcopio Castle, San Giovanni Church, both dating back to the 14th century, and other small churches. The town is renowned as a city art thanks to the production of ceramics: the potters’ workshops and stores selling pots, barrels and crockery make Grottaglie famous all over the world.
