LIZZANO Taranto (Puglia)
Sun and sea
Maybe the place name comes from “Lecce” (baroque province of south Apulia). Probably the town has Greco-Roman origins, but the first document in which it is mentioned dates back to the 9th-10th century. The first settlements were the houses of some monks living in that territory. From 1315 on (until the Unification of Italy) Lizzano was a fief for lots of aristocratic families.
Lizzano is situated on a mainly plain territory that goes down to the sea, a 6 km sandy-dunes seashore surrounded by a thick maquis. Here and there, in the surrounding countries, planted with olive trees and vines, there are dry stone walls, “trulli” (small limestone buildings) and “masserie” (fortified farms), typical symbols of peasant life. Among the most interesting buildings there are: San Pasquale di Baylon convent, the castle and the Church of Crocefisso.
