Storia comune di Manduria provincia di Taranto
The place name comes from the Indo-European word “mando” (“horse”) referring to an horse-pen. Indeed the town war renowned for horse farming, especially fighting horses. Manduria was founded by Messapian and it fought a long time against Taranto until it came under Romans in the 3rd century. It suffered Saracens’ invasions, it was destroyed and then rebuilt with the name of Casalnuovo. It took its original name, Manduria, again in the 18th century.

Manduria rises on Taranto Murgia hills, just among Taranto, Lecce and Brindisi. It is an important oil and wine producer: in fact the Primitivo di Manduria DOC wine is largely appreciated. Its seashores, San Pietro in Bevagna, Torre Colimena and Torre Borraco, make Manduria a popular summer place because it can boast a clear sea whose floors are rich in wildlife and archaeological findings. Furthermore the nature reserve of “Boschi di Cuturi e Rosamarina” is part of Manduria. The historic centre features with the ancient city walls dating from Messapian era, and some interesting building such as Colleggiata, a Romanesque cathedral, the medieval Jewish ghetto, Palazzo Imperiali and the Fonte Pliniano, a big natural cave where an underground spring streams.
