Storia comune di Martina Franca provincia di Taranto

A first settlement dates back to the 10th century when San Martino hill was occupied by some refugees from Taranto escaping from Saracens’ invasions. Bu the legal foundation dates back to 1300 when Philip of Anjou, Prince of Taranto, enlarged the existing village granting tax exemptions to those who decided to live there. Hence the name of Martina (from the previous village) and Franca from tax exemptions (in Italian “franchigie”? “franca”). During the 15th century it was an Aragones fief, but it lived its blooming moment with Caracciolo family in the 18th century. In 1799 Martina Franca took part to the rebel movements until the Unification of Italy.
