Storia comune di Massafra provincia di Taranto

A group of African (“afra”) refugees reached Apulia and the bishop of Taranto helped them giving the “mass” of land between Madonna della Scala and San Marco ravines: hence the name of the town. The first document in which the town is mentioned dates back to the 10th century. It was an important defensive stronghold for Taranto until the Normans, arrived there in 1080. They built the castle and enlarged the town. Later it was under Frederick II and then, under the Anjous, it was ruled by Oddone di Soliac in such a very violent manner that Carl of Anjou gave the fief back to Taranto until 1463. With Aragoneses it was ruled by Pappacoda, Carmignani and Imperiali families.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Massafra provincia di Taranto

Massafra rises in the hinterland of Taranto, on San Marco and Madonna della Scala ravines that cut it in two. Its territory is rich in ravines where there are some ancient rupestrian settlements dating back to different ages. Massafra owns a WWF reserve, “Riserva naturale del Monte Sant’Elia”, and two seashores, Chiatona and Marina di Ferrara, quiet popular places in summertime. Over the historic centre looms the Castle, overlooking San Marco ravine.
