Storia comune di Mottola provincia di Taranto

Probably the place name comes from the word “motta” meaning “hill” or “rocky mass”. The territory was inhabited since the prehistory. A first document dating back to the 11th century explains the foundation of Mottola as a stronghold against Saracens. With the Normans it became an Episcopal centre (until 1818), then it was under Swabians, Anjous, and Aragoneses. In 1653 it was sold to Caracciolo family and then it followed Apulia history until the Unification of Italy.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Mottola provincia di Taranto

Mottola is surrounded by a thick maquis and it rises on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Taranto and the Sila Mountains: that’s why it’s called the “spy of Ionian sea”. The town is built in round terraces leading in the middle of the town, an historic centre with little whitewashed houses, a Romanesque church and Hellenistic city walls, dating back to the 4th century AD. Mottola is definitely one of the most ancient rupestrian centre: here there are lots of medieval ravines whose most famous are the “grotte di Dio” (God’s grottoes) painted with frescos.
