Storia comune di Pulsano provincia di Taranto
The place name’s origins are unsure. Someone says it comes from “wrist”, “polso” in Italian because its inhabitants were firm men (in Italian they say “uomini di polso”, literally “men of wrist”). Someone else says it comes from the arm wrestling game played by soldiers and others says it comes from the word “polso” (wrist) referring to strength because Pulsano was a stronghold of Taranto. It was inhabited since the 14th century BC. In Roman Age it was a place for summertime rest. At the beginning of 1000 AD the castle was already used as a meeting point for waterfowls hunting. After Saracens’ invasions the inhabitants went away from the coast taking refuge all around the castle. Starting from the 12th century it became a fief for lots of families following Taranto’s history until the unification of Italy.

Pulsano is a seaside resort situated on a wonderful stretch of rugged coast rich in small clear-water bays with fine sand. Thus it is a touristic place that in summertime welcomes lots of visitors. Among the most interesting monuments there are De Falconibus Castle, Castelluccia Tower (memory of Saracens’ invasions), Santa Maria la Nova, a rupestrian church in which there is the reproduction of Lourdes grotto, and Mulino Scoppetta, an ancient mill that now is a national monument.
