Informations about the area
Conversano, an artistic and agricultural centre, stands on a hill (219 m above sea level). It has very ancient origins, dating back to the Palaeolithic period and its first name was Norba. Still today we can note the remains of the megalithic walls on the flight of the Convento S.Benedetto. From XI to XIII century, it was ruled by the Normans and from XV to XIX, it was the county of the Earls Acquaviva of Aragon, whose residence was the stately castle dominating the town from the highest site. From the original complex, constituted by the main tower, the castle developed with the succession of different families, and in 1700 the fortress turned into a palace. It is now the seat of a painting gallery where ten paintings portraying Gerusalemme Liberata are kept, works of the Neapolitan painter Paolo Finoglio. In the stables there were the famous Earls of Conversano? thoroughbred horses, then called lipiziani. There is also the very important Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, built in XII century. Moreover there is the convent of S.Benedetto (XII-XVII century) with its formerly private church, the church of S.Cosma (XVII century) and the church of Carmine (XVII century). In the outskirts of Conversano, there is the complex of S. Maria dell'Isola. The rural chapel of Santa Caterina in Romanesque-Gothic style with oriental influences, is the most famous of the rural churches in the territory. 7 km away from Conversano there is Marchione, the Counts' former summer residence. The medieval village of Castiglione, 5 km away from the town, where the medieval tower dominates and the remains of the necropolis are visible, is very interesting from an archaeological point of view. In the surroundings of Conversano there are a number of farms, called masserie, among which there are Masseria Monsignore and Masseria Carmine. The meeting place for young people is Piazza Conciliazione, called Largo della Corte or Piazza Castello, too.
Masseria Fanelli stands only 2,9 km away from Conversano and 6 km from the sea. Actually, it is placed on the main road to Polignano a Mare. Moreover it is strategically situated in the centre of the estate, and this allows to enjoy silence, broken only by bird-singing. Its position enables the guest to reach easily many famous tourist sites. Indeed it is close to Conversano, Polignano a Mare, Castellana Grotte, Alberobello with its trulli, and from here to Locorotondo, Martina Franca and the charming Valle d'Itria.
